Day 2

Day 2 and it's a very humid, warm one at work! Our AC doesn't work very well at the loading dock but I make do by drinking water to stay cool.

What I Ate Today (5/3/2010):

Morning (9 am):
- One tangerine (I tend to not have much of an appetite for a few hours after waking up)

Afternoon (12:00 pm - 2:00 pm):
-Almond milk "cereal" (by Ani Phyo):

Ingredients: Almond milk: water, soaked almonds, dates. Cereal: 1 fuji apple, raisins, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, soaked-dried-and-sprouted buckwheat groats, 1 banana.
Impression: Very delicious! One of my favorite dishes so far. Future attempts might involve filtered almond milk.
- Cantaloupe and watermelon

Impression: The watermelon was surprisingly ripe for this time of year (normally we'd have to wait a month or two). This was provided to me by a fellow employee, Jane, a very nice old lady who I get to chat with on a daily basis.

Late Afternoon (5:00 pm):
- Two Ataulfo mangoes

Evening (8:45 pm - 11:30 pm):
- Mushroom & Avocado Salad

Ingredients: Lettuce, king oyster mushrooms, grape tomatoes, celery, celery juice, garlic, garlic juice, ginger juice, jalapeno juice, raisins, dates, chives.
Impression: The more raisins and dates I added, the more I liked it. An excellent balance between spicy, sweet, mild, and semi-nutty (from the mushrooms). I really love mushrooms!
- Fresh, sliced honeydew melon

Impression: Delicious, great this time of year.
- Two Ataulfo mangoes and a horned melon (!):

Impression: Very ripe and delicious mangoes. I never had a horned melon before, and saw it yesterday while shopping with Tinah at Fresh World. It looked very intriguing and easily caught my eye. I decided, "why not!"- it was only 79 cents anyway! And I was very pleasantly surprised. It has quite a unique flavor and is surprisingly both tangy and refreshing. Tinah said she's tried it in the past and it was much more sour, so I assume that it was probably as ripe as it gets this time. One very interesting bit to note about it was that the skin was very easy to eat, no bitterness at all!

Day 2 was harder, if only for boxing practice in the evening. I was pretty hungry directly afterward but the hunger dissipated somewhat by the time I arrived home. My body is still cleansing itself of the meats, grains and other non-fruitarian foods I ceased to eat on Saturday.

Looking forward to Day 3!

I love you Tinah!

Adventuring the Fruitarian Frontier

Today marks day 1 of a fruitarian diet! Quite an undertaking for someone so used to meats and cooked grains. I embark on this journey with my soul mate and fiancé, Tinah, who has attempted this diet on and off for several years. Ideally it will be easier for the both of us to accomplish together than individually!

It is my hope to document this diet as best I can. My current physical statistics:

Weight: 155 lb.
Height: 5'11"
Waist Size: 32"
Body Type: Average/somewhat muscular (I train regularly in an amateur boxing program)

Embarrassing self-portrait #1:

What I Ate Today (5/2/2010):

Morning/afternoon (late start!):
- A few tangerines
- 1 Ataulfo mango
- Cantaloupe smoothie:

Impression: Looks delicious but was too foamy for my preference. Future attempts will probably involve frozen cantaloupe slices (with less added ice), or juicing.
- Green grapes (about a cup's worth)

Late afternoon:
- Mushroom salsa:

Ingredients: Mushrooms, chives, grape tomatoes, cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, onion, serrano pepper, ACV (apple cider vinegar).
Impression:
Loved the mushrooms, found it too spicy (Tinah looooooves serrano peppers), thought the lemon juice went very well with the mushrooms and chives. ACV was too much.

- Sweet Fruit Smoothie:

Ingredients: Two Ataulfo mangoes, 1/3rd whole pineapple, 3 seeded dates, 1 banana
Impression: Delicious! Future attempts will involve frozen ingredients and possibly the addition of some ice.

Evening:
- Almond milk "cereal" (by Ani Phyo):

Ingredients: Almond milk: water, soaked almonds, dates. Cereal: 1 fuji apple, raisins, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, soaked buckwheat groats (we didn't give them enough time to dehydrate), 1/2 a banana.
Impression: Very delicious! Future attempts will involve fully dehydrated buckwheat groats for a satisfying crisp.

So that marks the end of day 1! Not a true fruitarian diet yet; we introduced many veggies, nuts, greens, and some oils. Still, a definite step in the right direction.
